PHAKIC LENS (PIOL) IMPLANTATION:

Using this technique the natural ocular lens is not removed. An intraocular lens is positioned in the eye to correct the visual defect, this procedure may be used for myopia or hyperopia. Using this technique it is possible to correct the refractive defect of the eye and to maintain the capacity of the eye for far and near vision without the need for eyeglasses.

Functionally, the end result of this technique is similar to using a contact lens, only that in this case a special lens is surgically fixed in the eye. There are different variations of the surgical technique to fix these intraocular lens but the safest is the iris fixation of the lens.

In the laser years a new type of soft iris fixation lens has been introduced that can be inserted and fixed into position through an extremely small 3mm incision. The advantages this lens are faster post surgical recovery and lower risk of collateral effects.
