CONTACT LENSES FOR KERATOCONUS: OPTICAL CORRECTION

Initially, the visual impairment created by keratoconus (irregular astigmatism) can be corrected through use of prescription eyeglasses. Alternatively, since astigmatism tends to increase and the profile of the cornea may be irregular, special contact lenses, individually custom designed for each cornea must be used to improve vision.
Finding the correct kind of contact lens can be very frustrating. An imperfect lens can even damage the cornea and make it impossible to use even for very short periods of time. In some cases, the cornea slowly deforms until it becomes stable after some years with little damage. However, in more than 20% of cases, the cornea becomes extremely irregular and presents scars which make it impossible to use contact lenses.
Clinical observations have shown that although contact lenses do offer better vision, they have no effect whatsoever on the progression of the disease, and in a number of cases may cause deterioration of the cornea and favor keratoconus complications.

Dr. Abbondanza has been studying this pathology for over 30 years and, during his career, has become one of the leading experts on keratoconus and keratoconus conservative surgery, having been the first in Italy to use the Corneal Collagen Cross-linking (2005) and having conceived himself a microsurgical technique to avoid corneal transplantation, the Mini Asymmetric Radial Keratotomy (MARK) 1993.
