KERATOCONUS: Can corneal transplant be avoided?

Trapianto della corneaCorneal transplant can be avoided if conservative treatment is performed in an early stage of the disease.
If keratoconus is treated during stages I and II of the illness, the cornea still maintains certain structural characteristics that make conservative keratoconus surgery possible. Dr. Marco Abbondanza has dedicated many years to the study of this disease. Since 1988, with other colleagues, he has been working on a technique aiming to correct visual and non visual impairments related to this pathology. Through his experience with refractive incision surgery, he modified radial keratotomy, a technique for correcting myopic and astigmatic impairments, to the refractive correction in keratoconus.

trapianto della cornea
The technique consisted in making small incisions on the cornea to correct the astigmatism /deformation of the of the cornea caused by keratoconus, this was very effective in correcting astigmatism, but could leave excessive flattening of the cornea causing a residual visual impairment contrary to the original defect.
