I.C.R.S. (Intra Corneal Ring Segments) or Intracorneal Rings

Surgeons continue research for new conservative surgical methods aiming to avoid the necessity of corneal transplant, which must be considered only as a last useful therapeutic resort.
In 1994, several American surgeons devised a technique called I.C.R.S. Intra-Corneal Rings. This operation consists in implanting stiff plastic rings in the corneal depth aiming to strengthen the cornea in its weakest points. These rings act as a mechanical reinforcement of the unhealthy part of the cornea.
At the moment two different types of I.C.R.S are used , INTACS and Ferrara rings. Each of which is suitable for treatment with corneas with specific anatomical characteristics (such as corneal thickness and maximum curvature).
Preliminary results are satisfactory confirming the necessity of operating in the early stages of the illness in order to obtain good results.
